Feminist electropunk trio Le Tigre—comprising Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), J.D. Samson (MEN), and Johanna Fateman—puts on one hell of a live show. With their coordinated candy-colored outfits, self-produced video projections, ironic aerobics-style dance moves, and inventive blend of garage-band guitar riffs with lo-fi electronic effects, the band takes the rock show to the level of performance art. At once high-concept and deeply visceral, Le Tigre’s music and performances show that the political can be not only personal, but also danceable.
WHO TOOK THE BOMP? follows Le Tigre on the 2004 world tour for its last album, This Island. The film’s live performances are a seamlessly edited blend of 20 different shows played in 10 different countries. Previously unreleased backstage footage reveals the members’ struggles to maintain their political integrity in the face of greater exposure, as well as their reactions to real-life situations that echo the themes of sexism and homophobia explored in their songs—even as their close friendship helps them laugh in the face of these absurdities. Whether the trio is breaking into a spontaneous tour-bus dance party, mischievously poking fun at hyper-masculine metal bands, or kicking into a high-energy choreographed performance, they are smart, hilarious, provocative, and riveting—to long-time fans and newcomers alike.
